Leaded at the G-Spot : Leaded at the G-Spot, July 14th, 2007

Saturday, July 14th at the G-Spot in downtown Kansas City. KC rock band Leaded headlined a show with two other bands: Sunrise Revolt and Tin Can Carnival. During Leaded's set, the Pink Pistols, a group of models, wore outfits designed by Cali Roberta and modeled on stage.

Brian's take on the photos: "It was a great experience, overall. I love all the pics we took out on the street corner in front of the bar. For those I had my flash -- a Canon Speedlite 430 EX -- set on a tripod while I triggered it remotely with a Speedlite Transmitter mounted on my camera. That freed me up to mess around with different angles and so many shots turned out beautifully exposed; I can vouch for Canon's E-TTL flash system, even remotely! (That can only be done with the Speedlite Transmitter, I think; using radio remotes you have to settle for manual...which I'm generally too lazy to deal with, although I had my camera set to manual most of the time for better control of the pics...but dealing with manual on the flash too...um, no, lol. Especially when E-TTL worked out so fantastically!)

"Back inside I experimented with setting the flash (still on the tripod) directly in front of the stage about 15 feet back, up against a post to avoid being knocked over. I tested all sorts of shots and angles with the previous band, Tin Can Carnival, learning to deal with being within the line of site between the transmitter on my camera and the flash. Sometimes the signal bounced off the walls to activate the flash, but other times it didn't; the major drawback to this method. Unfortunately I felt the photos were too bright if not overexposed while reviewing them on my camera, so at the last minute, before Leaded's performance and the appearance of the Pink Pistols, I scrapped that method and mounted the flash directly onto my camera to 'play it safe'. In hindsight that turned out to be unnecessary because when I got home the Tin Can Carnival pics turned out to be actually pretty good, and I think the Leaded pics suffered as a result of me losing my nerve. Not that I didn't get any good photos; but I'm positive I would have gotten much better ones had I stuck to my guns. Lesson learned."
